Abdul Majeed Enters Davanagere South By-Election, Fields Afsar Kodlipete

SDPI Karnataka President Abdul Majeed enters Davanagere South by-election, fields Afsar Kodlipete as candidate. The party slams family politics and promises honesty.

The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) has officially joined the contest for the Davanagere South Assembly by-election, with Karnataka State President Abdul Majeed announcing Afsar Kodlipete as the party’s candidate while submitting the nomination papers on Monday.

In a strongly worded address to the media, Majeed criticised the decades-long family dominance in Davanagere South, describing the region’s development as “a mere mirage” despite prolonged rule by the same political group.

“An MLA must feel the pulse of the grassroots. They should understand the pain and struggles of ordinary people, possess the courage to face poverty, and carry the spirit of struggle with absolute honesty,” Majeed said.

“Someone born with a golden spoon or raised with a silver spoon can never truly grasp the hardships faced by common citizens.”

He presented Kodlipete as the ideal candidate, a seasoned activist with 17 years of experience in people’s movements, including farmers’ agitations, Dalit rights campaigns, and irrigation struggles across Karnataka.

“By fielding such a thoughtful and honest leader who understands Karnataka’s history and has fought on every public issue, we are confident the constituency will witness real development,” Majeed declared.

“We are contesting this election with the vision of comprehensive progress for Davanagere South.”

Majeed emphasised SDPI’s consistent grassroots presence during crises, citing the party’s active role during the COVID-19 pandemic, flood relief efforts, and the rehabilitation of displaced families in Hegdenagar.

“We stood with the people when others were absent. We work 24×7, 365 days a year for the public,” he asserted.

“No amount of pressure or money can purchase the Social Democratic Party of India.”

Expressing strong confidence, Majeed highlighted the constituency’s demographics, noting that nearly 80% of voters belong to Ahinda (minorities, backward classes, and Dalit) communities.

“As the representative of these sections, we are certain of victory. This is not about who else enters the fray; we are here to win and serve,” he said.

He appealed to Dalits, the Kuruba community, slum residents, street vendors, and all economically weaker sections, adding that organisations such as the Bhim Army and several Dalit and Kannada rights groups are expected to extend support.

If elected, Majeed pledged that the SDPI candidate and party workers would remain available to the public around the clock.

“Every voter in this constituency matters to us. We will address the pressing issues of the poor and ensure holistic development,” he assured.

The by-election for Davanagere South is scheduled for April 9, 2026, following the demise of veteran Congress leader and former MLA Shamanur Shivashankarappa.

The Congress has fielded his grandson, Samarth Mallikarjun, continuing the family legacy.

With SDPI’s entry, the contest is expected to intensify focus on issues of caste, class, political integrity, and development for marginalised communities in this key Karnataka constituency.
