Congress Worker Killed In Violent Clash In Karnataka's Ballari

Congress worker killed in Ballari clash over banners near Janardhana Reddy's residence. Karnataka CM orders probe as BJP demands judicial inquiry.

Ballari

A dispute over banners on New Year’s night escalated into deadly violence in Ballari, claiming the life of a young Congress worker and reigniting long-standing political rivalries in the mining-rich district.

The confrontation took place on January 1 near the residence of mining baron-turned-politician Gali Janardhana Reddy, pitting his supporters against those of local Congress MLA Nara Bharath Reddy.

Sequence Of Events

The incident stemmed from a disagreement over the installation of banners related to a Valmiki community event.

  • Congress workers reportedly attempted to put up banners near Janardhana Reddy’s home in Cowl Bazaar.
  • This led to a heated exchange with Reddy’s associates.
  • The situation quickly deteriorated, with reports of stone-pelting, petrol bombs, and gunfire.
  • Rajashekar, a 26-year-old Congress worker, was fatally shot.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah stated that shots were fired into the air, but one bullet struck Rajashekar.

He has directed a thorough investigation into the source of the gunfire.

Police confirmed the bullet came from a licensed private firearm.

Section 144 prohibitory orders remain in force, with heavy security deployed in sensitive areas.

Political Fallout And Accusations

An FIR has been registered against Gali Janardhana Reddy, his brother G. Somashekara Reddy, BJP leader B. Sriramulu, and eight others.

The BJP has described the incident as a “pre-planned attack” orchestrated by Congress.

State President B.Y. Vijayendra and Sriramulu alleged that Nara Bharath Reddy’s supporters arrived armed and targeted Reddy’s residence, citing frustration over the BJP’s growing local influence.

Janardhana Reddy has rejected the allegations, accusing Congress of staging the violence.

The BJP is demanding a High Court-monitored probe and has submitted a memorandum to the Director General of Police.

Congress leaders attended Rajashekar’s funeral and blamed Reddy’s camp for the firing.

Ballari’s Enduring Political Tensions

Ballari has long been a political hotspot, shaped by mining wealth and powerful family dynasties.

The Reddy brothers dominated the region for years amid controversies over illegal mining.

Janardhana Reddy’s recent merger of his Kalyana Rajya Pragathi Paksha with the BJP bolstered the party’s position, but it has not erased underlying rivalries.

This incident underscores how minor disputes, such as banner placement, can quickly spiral into violence in areas where political loyalties run deep, and law enforcement is often tested.

As of January 2, no further violence has been reported, though tensions persist.

An impartial and swift investigation is crucial to ensure justice and prevent escalation.
