In a candid and heartfelt interview, actress Malavika Mohanan didn’t hold back as she addressed one of the most pressing issues of our time—women’s safety in India.
Reflecting on the recent horrific incident in Kolkata where a trainee doctor was tragically raped and murdered, Malavika shared her deep concerns and frustrations with the way society continues to fail women.
“This Is Not Just About Patriarchy—It is a Mindset Issue”
As Malavika spoke with India Today, her emotions were palpable.
The actress, known for her influential roles and advocacy for women’s rights, revealed how deeply the news affected her, especially while actively promoting female empowerment.
“It is devastating,” Malavika said, her voice heavy with emotion. “These acts of violence are not just isolated events—they are symptoms of a much deeper issue. It is not just about patriarchy; it is about a mindset that has been ingrained in our society for generations. Moreover, until we change that mindset, nothing will truly change.”
The Struggle to Find Solutions
Malavika did not shy away from expressing her frustration and helplessness in the face of such overwhelming issues.
“How do we get to the root of this and stop it? It makes you feel powerless,” she admitted.
However, instead of giving in to despair, Malavika called for a revolution of the mind.
“We need to change the way people think, the way they see women. It is not just about making laws or holding protests; it is about changing the way we, as a society, view and treat women every single day.”
Using Her Platform for Change
Despite the heavy subject matter, Malavika remains undeterred in her mission to use her voice for good.
The actress, who is currently riding high on the success of her Tamil action film ‘Thangalaan,’ is determined to continue advocating for women’s rights both on and off the screen.
“Portraying strong female characters is important to me, but speaking out in real life is equally important. We need to protect our women, which starts with changing how we think,” she emphasized.
‘Thangalaan,’ in which she stars alongside Chiyaan Vikram and Parvathy Thiruvothu, has been a hit, and fans are eagerly awaiting the Hindi version, which will be released on September 6.
However, for Malavika, the real victory will come when women can walk the streets without fear, when the news is not filled with stories of violence, and when the next generation grows up with respect ingrained in their hearts.
Action
As she wrapped up the interview, Malavika made a powerful plea:
“We cannot just sit back and watch this happen. Every one of us has a role to play in changing this mindset. We all step up and make sure our voices are heard.”
With her passion and determination, Malavika Mohanan is not just a star on the silver screen—she’s a beacon of hope for many, inspiring others to join the fight for a safer and more just world for women.
