Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended an “outstanding” community programme in Kuala Lumpur on February 7, 2026, praising the strong cultural and emotional connections between Malaysia’s Indian diaspora and India.
In a post on X shortly after the event, Modi wrote: “Heartening to witness the deep bonds of culture, heritage, and shared values that connect our diaspora to India.
The warmth and enthusiasm of the Indian community here reflect the enduring strength of India-Malaysia ties.”
The event, part of Modi’s two-day official visit to Malaysia, also featured Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim as a special guest, who addressed the gathering and underlined the growing friendship between the two countries.
Record-Breaking Cultural Performance
A highlight of the programme was a massive synchronized dance performance by hundreds of artists showcasing Indian classical forms such as Bharatanatyam, Odissi, and Kathak, alongside vibrant folk styles.
The performance set a new record in Malaysia, earning direct appreciation from Prime Minister Modi.
The grand display underscored the living heritage of Indian culture abroad and was warmly received by both leaders and the large audience.
Boosting Strategic And Economic Partnership
The diaspora event complements the broader objectives of Modi’s visit, which aims to deepen cooperation in defence, security, technology, and trade.
Bilateral trade between India and Malaysia reached nearly $19.86 billion in FY 2024-25, making Malaysia India’s third-largest trading partner within ASEAN.
Recent initiatives include an upgraded strategic partnership and the launch of the Malaysia-India Digital Council.
Malaysia is home to approximately 2.9 million people of Indian origin, one of the largest overseas Indian communities, serving as a vital bridge for people-to-people ties.
The joint appearance of Modi and Anwar at this community-focused gathering signals a strong personal rapport and a shared commitment to closer collaboration in the Indo-Pacific region.
