Hyderabad, November 15, 2025: In a spectacular ceremony that drew thousands of fans and industry insiders, renowned director SS Rajamouli officially announced the title of his highly anticipated collaboration with Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu.
The film, previously referred to as SSMB29 or GlobeTrotter, is now titled Varanasi, promising an epic blend of adventure, mythology, and high-octane action.
The reveal took place at Ramoji Film City during the GlobeTrotter event, which was live-streamed globally in partnership with Hollywood outlet Variety.
Attendees were treated to a motion poster and first glimpse featuring Mahesh Babu in a rugged, intense avatar, riding a charging bull while wielding a trishul, set against a dramatic, dusty landscape evoking ancient lore.
Rajamouli, celebrated for blockbusters like Baahubali and the Oscar-winning RRR, described the project as a “journey into ancient secrets and human resilience.”
While plot details remain guarded, sources indicate a narrative infused with sci-fi elements and Ramayana-inspired themes, set in a jungle adventure framework.
Mahesh Babu, introduced as the character Rudhra, expressed his enthusiasm:
“Working with Rajamouli sir is a dream come true. This role demands physical and emotional depth like never before.”
The actor’s transformation, complete with long, curly hair, a beard, and a bloodied, fierce demeanor, has already gone viral, drawing comparisons to iconic adventure heroes.
Adding international flair, Priyanka Chopra Jonas joins as the female lead, Mandakini, marking her return to Indian cinema.
Her character poster depicts a strong, authoritative figure, hinting at pivotal action sequences.
Malayalam star Prithviraj Sukumaran plays the antagonist Kumbha, a role he calls “one of the most ambitious in my career,” praising Rajamouli’s visionary scale.
The soundtrack is composed by Oscar-winner MM Keeravani, ensuring a musical epic to complement the visuals.
With a reported budget exceeding ₹1200 crore, production is underway in Hyderabad, including elaborate sets recreating Varanasi’s essence.
The film is slated for a theatrical release on March 25, 2027, aiming for pan-global distribution.
