Kochi, December 20, 2025: Renowned Malayalam actor, screenwriter, director, and producer Sreenivasan died on Saturday at the age of 69, marking the end of an era in Malayalam cinema.

The multifaceted artist, celebrated for his sharp social satire and relatable portrayals of the commoner, had been battling prolonged health issues related to cardiac ailments.

Circumstances Of Death

Sreenivasan was being transported for routine dialysis when he experienced sudden physical distress.

He was rushed to Tripunithura Taluk Hospital in Kochi, where doctors declared him brought dead around 8:30 AM.

Sources close to the family confirmed he had been under home treatment in Udayamperoor for age-related illnesses in recent years.

A Towering Legacy In Malayalam Cinema

Born on April 6, 1956, in Patyam near Thalassery, Kannur, Sreenivasan debuted as an actor in 1977 with Manimuzhakkam.

Over nearly five decades, he appeared in more than 225 films, wrote iconic screenplays, and directed acclaimed works like Vadakkunokkiyantram (1989) and Chinthavishtayaya Shyamala (1998).

His scripts redefined comedy and social commentary in the 1980s and 1990s, often collaborating with directors like Sathyan Anthikad and Priyadarshan.

Sreenivasan’s writing captured the aspirations, frustrations, and humour of the Malayali middle class like no other.

“No one else can express the dreams and broken dreams of the middle class like Sreeni… Dasan and Vijayan became their own people for every Malayali because of Sreeni’s blessed writing talent.”

Mohanlal visited the family and appeared visibly emotional.

Mammootty paid respects at Sreenivasan’s residence, accompanied by his wife.

Other luminaries, including Dileep, Mukesh, Prithviraj Sukumaran, Dulquer Salmaan, and Kamal Haasan, expressed grief, hailing him as a “cinematic legend.”

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan called his passing an “irreparable loss,” praising Sreenivasan’s ability to reflect everyday life through realism and satire.

Family And Funeral Details

Sreenivasan is survived by his wife, Vimala, and sons, Vineeth Sreenivasan and Dhyan Sreenivasan, both prominent actors and directors in Malayalam cinema.

Vineeth and Dhyan were overcome with emotion upon receiving the news.

His body was kept for public homage at Ernakulam Town Hall on Saturday. The funeral is scheduled for Sunday, December 21, at 10 AM at his residence in Kandanad, with official honours.

Sreenivasan’s departure leaves a void, but his films, filled with laughter, reflection, and timeless relevance, ensure his voice echoes forever in Malayalam hearts.
