Has SDPI Ever Won An MLA Or MP Seat In Karnataka

Has the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) ever won an MLA or MP seat in Karnataka? Despite contesting multiple Assembly and Lok Sabha polls since 2009.

The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) has failed to win even a single seat in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly or the Lok Sabha since its formation in 2009, despite fielding candidates in multiple polls and recording modest local body successes in the state.

The party, often described as the political front of the now-banned Popular Front of India, has contested Karnataka Assembly elections in 2013, 2018 and 2023, as well as Lok Sabha polls in 2014, 2019 and 2024.

However, its vote share has remained negligible, and it has never opened its account in the state legislature or Parliament.

In the 2023 Karnataka Assembly elections, SDPI contested 16 seats after initially announcing plans for 100.

It won zero seats.

Fifteen of its 16 candidates lost their security deposits, polling less than one-sixth of the total votes in those constituencies.

The party’s state president, Abdul Majeed, put up the strongest show in the Narasimharaja constituency (Mysuru), securing 41,037 votes (22.34%) and saving his deposit, but still finished second behind the Congress candidate.

Earlier, in the 2013 polls, SDPI had contested 24 seats in alliance with the Bahujan Samaj Party and managed around 1.01 lakh votes statewide, but again failed to win any seat.

Its performance in subsequent elections has been even weaker.

The story is no different at the national level.

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, SDPI fielded candidates in several Karnataka constituencies but drew a blank, consistent with its nationwide record of never winning a single parliamentary seat.

Local Body Bright Spots, But No Breakthrough

While SDPI has struggled at the Assembly and parliamentary levels, it has made inroads in grassroots politics.

The party has won dozens of gram panchayat seats in Karnataka and secured one corporator seat in the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) from the Siddapura ward in the earlier municipal polls.

These victories have been highlighted by the party as evidence of growing grassroots support, particularly in areas with significant minority populations.

Political observers note that SDPI’s strategy has largely focused on Muslim-majority wards in local body elections, where it has occasionally emerged as a small but noticeable player.

However, its inability to translate this support into higher-level victories reflects the tough competition from established parties such as Congress, the BJP, and the JD(S).

With Karnataka’s next Assembly elections due in 2028 and no breakthroughs to date, SDPI continues to operate primarily as a regional fringe player.

Party leaders maintain that their focus remains on long-term community empowerment and local governance rather than immediate Assembly or parliamentary gains.

As of April 2026, a by-election in Davangere South saw SDPI field a candidate, but results are yet to indicate any shift in the party’s fortunes at the legislative level.

The party’s repeated electoral setbacks at higher levels have not dented its claim to be a voice for minorities at the panchayat and municipal levels.

However, the road to becoming a serious contender in Karnataka’s mainstream politics remains long.
