Kannada actress Ranya Rao, known for her roles in South Indian films, has been arrested for alleged gold smuggling at Kempegowda International Airport.
The 31-year-old was detained on March 3 while attempting to bring 14.8 kg of gold into the country, raising suspicions of her involvement in a more extensive smuggling network.
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) is now investigating the extent of her connections in the case.
Ranya, who hails from Chikmagalur, Karnataka, was under DRI surveillance due to her frequent trips to Dubai.
Upon arrival, she was intercepted, and authorities discovered gold concealed in her clothing and accessories.
Following her arrest, she was remanded to judicial custody for 14 days, pending further investigation.
Adding to the intrigue, Ranya’s stepfather is a senior IPS officer in Karnataka.
While no confirmed link exists between him and the case, his position has heightened the investigation’s scrutiny.
The authorities are now probing whether Ranya acted alone or was part of a more extensive smuggling operation.
Ranya Rao began acting after completing her engineering degree at Dayananda Sagar College in Bangalore.
She trained at the Kishore Namit Kapoor Acting Institute before debuting in the 2014 Kannada film Maanikya, starring Sudeep.
She later transitioned to Tamil cinema, starring in 2016’s Wagah alongside Vikram Prabhu.
With the case still unfolding, investigators are working to determine if Ranya was a courier or a key player in the smuggling operation.
The findings could have significant implications, particularly given her high-profile connections.
